Hello All!*

Thank you for taking time to read my monthly newsletters. I hope they provide you with some insight into the work I am doing on behalf of the South Winnipeg-St. Norbert ward, and for all Winnipeggers. My website JaniceLukes.ca is updated weekly with my activities as your City Councillor, and feel free to contact me with comments on how to make our City an even better place to live!

1. Summer Office Hours

My office at City Hall will be open all summer to answer calls and e-mails with the exception of the first two weeks of August, when both Bev and I will be away ‘recharging’!  Please email 311@winnipeg.ca or call 311 during this time.

I will also be hosting “Coffee and Conversation with your City Councillor” again on Saturday mornings in August at the St. Norbert Farmers’ Market - so pop by and offer your insight on potholes, police, construction or anything else that interests you!  See Summer Office Hours.

2. City Hall Update

As your City Councillor, not only do I focus on making the South Winnipeg-St. Norbert ward a better place to live, work and play, I have multiple roles on City Council and am jointly responsible in working towards improving the quality of life for all Winnipeggers.

Take a minute to read Mayor Bowman’s ‘Summer Wrap Up’ on actions and decisions made by City Council over the past two years. As a member of the Mayor’s Executive Policy Committee, Chair of Infrastructure Renewal and Public Works Committee, and a member of the Finance Committee, I have played a key role in many of the positive changes and accomplishments we have made for the residents of Winnipeg.

But clearly there is more work to do in many areas; improving 311 service as well as efficiencies in this large bureaucracy are two of the key items that top my list for the coming year. This fall, we will have a very broad public discussion on how we should best plan and position the City for future growth. I expect and hope to see many changes result from these discussions. I welcome your feedback!

3.  How to Correctly Report By-Law Infractions

The Fort Richmond-University Heights Neighbourhood Association has developed an excellent website NeighbourhoodAssociation.ca, designed to educate residents, tenants and landlords on their responsibilities and rights living in our community. The website has excellent info on the 7 most common by-law infractions, how to correctly report them, and the expected City response.  See Reporting By-Law Infractions.

4.  Road & Active Transportation Construction

In addition to the regular maintenance of roads, sidewalks and bike paths, there are some very exciting projects occurring in the South Winnipeg–St Norbert ward this season!  Check out the new Local Streetssidewalks and bikepaths under construction!

As Chair of the Infrastructure Renewal and Public Works Committee, I’m very pleased to have worked with City Council, City Staff and the Manitoba Heavy Construction Association to secure an increase in roads and sidewalks in 2016 due to a favorable construction market. This increase in roadwork will help in addressing the dire infrastructure deficit we are facing.

 5. Open House for SW Rapid Transit Corridor

Please join me at the Rapid Transit Open House on Tuesday, July 19 to see the final route and design of the rapid transit corridor.  Overpasses, tunnels, pathways and other aspects of the project have changed since the last open house. Learn about timelines, construction of a station at the U of M, and more!

See my Events page for details of other events in our community! There is no shortage of things to do! This Saturday, July 16 is a very busy day with a number of interesting community activities – I’ll be attending a few so may see you there!

6.  St. Norbert & Bridgwater Construction

Two communities in our ward have a lot of construction occurring this summer on their Main Streets! St. Norbert is having a watermain replaced, followed by the installation of pedestrian lights and banners! Over in Bridgwater Forest, Center Street in Bridgwater will be under construction as many new businesses and shops open their doors!

7. Park & Greenspace Enhancements

Ensuring our parks are clean, green and vibrant is a priority of mine. In the South Winnipeg–St. Norbert Ward, we are fortunate to have an abundance of parks, and there are a number of much needed improvements taking place this year.  Take some time this summer to explore these greenspaces in our community!
