Changes to City Ward Boundaries – Attend a Public Hearing
September 6, 2017 @ 6:00 pm
The City of Winnipeg has just announced a series of public hearings to allow Winnipeggers to make comments on changes to the current ward boundaries.
Recently compiled 2016 Stats Canada data shows the South Winnipeg-St Norbert ward now has tens of thousands more residents than many other wards in Winnipeg . . . with an estimated population of nearly 68,000 residents! Our ward’s population is over 44% higher than the average population (47,016), and is in fact double the size of some other City wards (see table below).
For more information, refer to Challenges of Rapid Growth.
As part of the review, the public is encouraged to provide feedback on changes at the hearings:
- Wed., September 6, 2017 – 6 p.m. – City Hall, Council Chamber, 510 Main Street
- Thur., October 5, 2017 – 6 p.m. – Jonathan Toews Community Centre, 1188 Dakota Street
- Wed., November 1, 2017 – 6 p.m. – City Hall, Council Chamber, 510 Main Street
Any changes to the ward boundaries will become effective at the close of the nomination period for the 2018 Civic Election, and would apply to all elected officials. The number of wards will not change as result of this review.
All persons are welcome to attend these public hearings, whether to make an in-person presentation to the commission, or simply to view the proceedings. The public hearings will be live-streamed and accessible on the City’s website. Written submissions to the commission for those unable to attend the public hearings will be accepted until 4:30 p.m. on October 5, 2017.
