Since its inauguration over forty years ago, the first mosque in Winnipeg has been home to a burgeoning Muslim community. Located at 247 Hazelwood Avenue in St. Vital, the Manitoba Islamic Association mosque opened its doors in 1976 to a small yet diverse group of Muslims representing a spectrum of cultures, languages and religious practice. The mosque was always more than a place of worship, it was a place to learn, to play, to socialize. Everyone knew each other. Community became extended family, which meant life-long friendships, disagreements and growing pains. Intertwined throughout the film are firsthand accounts of the establishment of the first mosque by its pioneers, and personal stories of those who grew up in the mosque. Having outgrown its first mosque, the now active community of over ten thousand Muslims has not forgotten its roots.
