Summer is here with the arrival of June! We are still in pandemic but vaccinations are moving us forward and soon this pandemic will be behind us. Last week, the Tk'emlúps te Secwépemc First Nation in British Columbia reported remains of 215 children had been found on the grounds of the former Kamloops Indian Residential School. This is tragic news, but as we know, the Truth and Reconciliation Report estimates over 4,000 Indigenous children are listed as having died at residential schools from the date the first ones opened in the 1870s until the last one closed in 1996. Evil comes under many guises. The City’s Welcoming Winnipeg committee is revisiting the street name Bishop Grandin, named after a prominent proponent of the residential school system. I’ve seen some incredible orange memorials on the exteriors of many Pembina Trails School Division schools honouring the children. For sure the teachers are having difficult discussions with children and I am so grateful these discussions are occurring.
