It's been extra busy this past month, and I expect it will as I wrap up the end of my four year term and prepare for the fall Civic election on October 24th. All committees have full agendas and there is much work to complete for everyone. Honestly I can’t believe it’s been four years since the last election. This is a high paced place and time just disappears. Again, this newsletter focuses primarily on the South Winnipeg-St Norbert ward activities as local media covers City-wide initiatives. 1. Ward Boundary Changes
|
If it seems like I’m mentioning the ward boundary changes on a regular basis, it’s because this is a very significant change that will be occurring leading up to the fall Civic election. Because of the rapid population growth over the past 6+ years, the South Winnipeg- St Norbert ward is essentially being split into two wards. 2. Reaching 1000 New Apartment Units Along Pembina Highway
|
There have been many new apartment blocks approved for development along Pembina Highway, University Crescent, and Snow Drive over the past few years.To see the new buildings and details, see my presentation on New Apartment Developments in the 2018 Illegal Rooming House File Update

3. South Perimeter Proposed Safety Improvements
|
Over 30,000 vehicles a day use the South Perimeter. The Perimeter is nearing capacity and requires significant safety improvements to accommodate this volume of vehicles. The Province of Manitoba is proposing major changes to access and egress intersections and medians that will fundamentally improve safety. Please see South Perimeter Proposed Safety Improvements

4. June 6th - OPEN HOUSE at Southeast Collegiate for Area Residents
|
Southeast Collegiate on Lee Blvd is welcoming area residents for a tour of their brand new collegiate. We’ve all been watching the construction of this beautiful new facility and now we can take a peek inside! I’ve worked with Southeast Collegiate staff to allow the Graduating Class of 2018 to take us on a tour! Please join me on June 6th. See Open House Southeast Collegiate

5. June 13th OPEN HOUSE - Your Recreation and Park Priorities
|
In Southwest Winnipeg, we know there is a recreation deficit and lack of maintenance for our parks and greenspaces due to rapid growth, and a lack of proper planning for new developments. The City of Winnipeg needs to hear from you! Please attend June 13th Open House at Waverley Heights Community Centre and tell the City what YOUR recreation and parks priorities are. 6. Improving Public Notification on New Developments
|
The City is looking at ways to improve public notification of new land developments so processes are as open and transparent as possible. Often, small yellow signs are posted indicating there is a development application. Sometimes depending on the side of lot or development, larger white 4’ x 8’ notifications are posted. 7. Update - Fire Hall In Waverley West
|
In September, 2016, the City awarded a contract to produce a ‘Standards of Response Coverage’ report to develop a process that will support the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service goal of providing safe, effective, and efficient fire, rescue and medical response. This report will assess current needs and make recommendations on how to optimize the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service. See details at Fire Hall in Waverley West

9. Special Events
|
June is a very busy party month with graduations and celebrations! You may want to check out the Bridgwater Lakes Neighbourhood Association’s Family Fun Days, South Winnipeg Community Centre’s Summer Carnival, the St Norbert Farmers’ Market on Wednesdays and Saturdays, I’ve arranged for a special Women’s Only Swim at Margaret Grant Pool, and the Manitoba Islamic Association’s EID Festival, complete with hennas, horses, fireworks that is open to the entire community!
