Construction to Begin:  South Winnipeg Recreation Campus

VERY exciting news!   This month, a report will be coming to Council, requesting Council’s approval to award the construction contract to a winning bidder – who will then start construction on the South Winnipeg Recreation Campus!

Yes, it’s been a long time coming – due to an incredible number of hurdles (see History) but we’ve finally reached the point where construction will begin on Phase 1!

Phase 1: The gymnasium, meeting rooms, running track, spray pad & more – will be constructed beside the new elementary and high school in Bison Run.

Phase 2: Design and outreach on the aquatic centre will start this spring. Once funding is secured, the aquatic centre will be constructed & attached to Phase 1 building.

Future phases are anticipated to include an ice arena and library.

Spring Event:

  • I’ll be updating you on when we will be hosting a land blessing and sod turning ceremony this spring – which will be the start of construction on the long anticipated South Winnipeg Recreation Campus!

The South Winnipeg Recreation Campus complex is being designed as a ‘regional recreation centre’ meaning that while it directly serves area residents, it also supports residents in an area of 4-6 km surrounding the centre. Regional centres bring multiple activities together in one place, instead of having buildings that only serve one purpose.

  • I will note, a 2024 Stats Canada population update estimated the Waverley West ward at 71,000 people.
  • For comparison, the City of Brandon’s population is estimated at 59,899 people.
  • And most City wards, on average encompass ~ 55,000 residents.

Currently, there are no City-owned or operated recreational centres in southwest Winnipeg that combine a pool with other recreation spaces.  The development of a regional centre is a first for Winnipeg and I’m very proud to have worked with many amazing individuals over the years, all who’ve played a key role in making this project a reality! Thank you Craig Sheldon, Chuck Davidson and Ian Shaw and many, many others!
