Improving Transit in Whyte Ridge: Changes to Routes 649 and 650

Winnipeg Transit is proposing important updates to Routes 649 (Chevrier) and 650 (McGillivray) that will improve service in Whyte Ridge and better match how residents are using transit today. The changes will go into effect with the fall schedule on September 6, 2026.

The most significant change is to Route 649, which will be extended further along Scurfield Boulevard. This adjustment increases coverage within the neighbourhood and is designed to serve more riders, including the residents of the new development going in at 2320 McGillivray Blvd.

This expanded routing is especially meaningful for students travelling to Vincent Massey Collegiate, as it strengthens an already important school connection and improves access from more parts of Whyte Ridge. Recent service updates have already added additional trips on Route 649 to support student travel, and this extension builds on that momentum.

At the same time, Route 650 will be simplified. Instead of looping along Scurfield Boulevard and duplicating the 649 route, it will remain on Fleetwood Road. This change reflects lower-than-expected ridership on the 650 in this section.

In short, Route 649 becomes a stronger, more useful neighbourhood connector—particularly for students and higher-density areas—while Route 650 is streamlined to operate more efficiently. Please see the report here.
