Kenaston and Abinojii Mikanah Intersection – Future Upgrade

I know the frustration level is high when it comes to many aspects of the Kenaston and Abinojii intersection.  I encourage you to review a very recent engineering Collisions and Signalization Changes – Kenaston and Abinojii Mikanah report.

  • The most common questions I receive is  “When will this intersection be upgraded?”

This intersection is an integral part of a much BIGGER transportation picture!  Please read this carefully to understand the BIG PICTURE and timelines – which include information on upgrading the Kenaston and Abinojii Mikanah intersection. (Contrary to popular belief, the City and Province do conduct long term road network planning.)

This is the BIG PICTURE plan:

South Perimeter Highway – McGillivray Interchange Project

  • The Province of Manitoba is constructing an overpass at the intersection of the Perimeter (PTH 100) and McGillivray
  • The Province is anticipating completion in 2030
  • In addition, the Province conducted multiple ‘transportation movement’ and ‘road location’ studies in the surrounding area.
  • See detailed overview of a two year study  completed in 2024.

The 2024 study recommended a ‘Short Term Preferred Route and a ‘Long Term Preferred Route’ to move traffic in and out and around the City of Winnipeg.

SHORT TERM Preferred Route:

  • in the short term, the Province’s preferred route, was McGillivray Blvd. (twinning to improve safety) from the Perimeter to Brady Road
  • the Province hasn’t provided a timeline for ‘short term’ but it won’t occur before the McGillivray Interchange is complete in 2030
  • Detailed design will take 2 years, then to secure funding – I’d anticipating somewhere in the timeframe of 2035-2045

 LONG TERM Preferred Route:

The Province’s long term preferred route is to connect Abinojii Mikanah from Kenaston thru to the Charleswood Parkway

  • This would result in a 4 lane road being constructed on Provincial lands and City lands (between Whyte Ridge and Bridgwater Lakes)
  • This route would require the Kenaston –  Abinojii Mikanah Intersection to be upgraded from the current design
  • The Province of Manitoba has not indicated a timeline for this connection, only that it is ‘long term’ and it would be AFTER their ‘short term preferred route’ being the twinning of McGillivray.
  • I estimate the timeline for the upgrade to be 2050 onward.
  • The city would not re-design the intersection without the Province’s engagement and approval.  And it wouldn’t be constructed on its own – just the intersection – as it is part of a much larger transportation picture.

The timeframe of when the SHORT and LONG TERM routes are constructed, is ultimately up to the Province of Manitoba.

IN SUMMARY:

Please take comfort in knowing the Bison Extension – Waverley Intersection upgrade will alleviate some of the congestion on Kenaston in the mornings.

  • This Bison Extension – Waverley Intersection is a top priority for the City of Winnipeg.
  • I expect construction for this project to start by ~ 2030

This is a lot of information to answer “When will this intersection be upgraded?”    if you have additional questions, please contact me and we can discuss further.
