Social Media Update – January 2026

It’s the middle of January, and we are well into 2026, and it’s shaping up to be another exciting year! I want to share an update with you about how I’ll be receiving feedback and comments going forward on my social media platforms.

EFFECTIVE TODAY:

I will be welcoming all comments, questions, and feedback by email at: jlukes@winnipeg.ca vs. on social media platforms. Two Way Communication is very important to me:

I will continue to use a wide range of platforms and approaches to share factual information, including:

  • A very robust and frequently updated website with local ward information (www.janicelukes.ca)
  • Regular posts on my personal and work Facebook pages
  • An active Instagram account (yes — I probably need to take more “pretty” photos)
  • Regular e-newsletters sent to email subscribers
  • (I’m no longer using X)

MOST importantly, I make a very, very intentional effort to attend events across the ward — because nothing replaces face-to-face conversations. Being accessible to residents is a priority for me- and events are a great way to connect.

WHY THIS CHANGE ?

As many of you know, Waverley West is the fastest-growing ward in Winnipeg.

According to the 2025 Statistics Canada population estimate, our ward is now home to 70,980 residents — while the average City ward population is approximately 56,000.

That growth means:

  • More people to support
  • More opportunities and challenges to respond to
  • And significantly more communication to manage

THE REALITY:

The challenge I’m facing is simply this:

  • I can no longer keep up with responding meaningfully to comments and feedback across MULTIPLE social media platforms AND continue to do the day-to-day work required of a City Councillor!!
  • Hiring someone part time to manage social media responses won’t work as they wouldn’t have the knowledge or context to properly answer many of your questions.
  • I do, however, have stellar full- time staff who I work with every day – who help manage my email & issues of all kinds!

GOING FORWARD:

I have a lot of important information to share, as Waverley West continues to be a powerhouse ward with incredible momentum & lots happening ! And I want to hear from YOU – via email or in person.

On my social media accounts:

  • Comments will be turned off on Facebook
  • I will not be monitoring Facebook Messenger on my personal & work accounts (I never really have)
  • I likely will not be commenting on neighbourhood Facebook pages (maybe if I have time)
  • Instagram comments will be turned off

So, if you have any comments, questions, and feedback please send to: jlukes@winnipeg.ca

Thank you for your understanding – and for your continued engagement.

Janice Lukes

City Councillor, Waverley West
