Traffic Calming Curb Installation -Chancellor Drive

The city will be installing traffic calming curbs on Chancellor Drive-130 metres north of Lake Island Crescent at the pedestrian crosswalk.  The curbs are meant to reduce speed and provide a safer environment for pedestrians and cyclists at the crosswalk.

  • Chancellor is a collector street, collecting traffic from within the neighbourhood. We have studied it many times to see how to reduce speed: SEE: Chancellor Traffic Study

This is the section of Chancellor between two schools/ a child care facility and the community centre.  People just need slow down-but it seems they can’t so we have to change the darn road structure so they are forced to slow down. Very frustrating!!  I’d say what is more frustrating, is the speeders are from the neighbourhood. People from ie: Transcona aren’t using Chancellor to get to Bridgwater.

Cities across Canada have been using these traffic calming curbs for years. This is one initiative to improve road safety. The city now has a ‘road safety department’ and this department has many initiatives underway – see pages 43-65: Strategic Road Safety Plan

The Chancellor project, along with other curb installation in the city –  is a pilot project to understand how effective these curbs will be in reducing speed and providing a safer pedestrian environment.  311 is prepared to accept any feedback you may have.

FYI:

One of the top three complaints / request for action that I receive in my office is to reduce speeding drivers. I believe this is a common request to all Councillors throughout the city. Speed combined with distracted driving (MPI’s top reason for death / collisions) does not make for safe roads. We are trying to reduce speed to improve safety.
