“Lohri” was originally celebrated on winter solstice day, being the shortest day and the longest night of the year to denote the last of the coldest days of winter. Lohri is celebrated mostly in houses that have recently had a marriage or childbirth to welcome the new member in the family. Lohri celebrations will reach a higher pitch of excitement. The bonfire is lit at sunset in the main village square. People toss sesame seeds, sugar-candy and other sweets onto the bonfire, sit around it, sing and dance till the fire dies out. Some people perform a prayer and go around the fire. This is to show respect to the natural element of fire. This ritual is performed for thanking the Sun God and seeking his continued protection.”

This festival provides a great opportunity for our children to connect with their roots, cultural values and traditions. By having Lohri Mela/Festival at the community level, it will allow us to celebrate Lohri in a traditional way. By sitting together around the fire, singing our traditional songs, dancing with our children, families and friends, we will have brought the community together in celebration with great pride and joy.

We invite you and your family, as well as friends to be a part of this event with your community and to be a part of the larger family. Last year we had a crowd of 3000 people and we are hoping to get more in 2020. It will be an excellent platform to further develop and establish your connection with the community.

We look forward to seeing you on January 11th 2020.
