PARKING BAN DETAILS

Parking bans ensure the ongoing movement of private and public vehicles,  as well as the fast and safe movement of emergency vehicles (ambulance, fire and police).  There are 5 types of parking bans: two types are used every year.  The remaining three parking bans are used periodically as required.  See all details below.

1. OVERNIGHT PARKING BAN – 2 AM TO 7 AM ON DESIGNATED STREETSSnow Route sign

  • This parking ban occurs annually.  In 2015/2016, the ban runs from December 1, 2015 to March 1, 2016 on designated streets.
  • In order to ensure that roadways are properly cleaned, vehicles must not park on these streets from 2 a.m. to 7 a.m.
    • Parking tickets will be issued between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m.
    • Vehicles may also be towed to Tartan Towing’s compound at 41 Higgins Avenue (phone 204-952-4530).

2. RESIDENTIAL STREETS – SNOW PARKING BANKnow Your Zone

A residential streets snow parking ban usually is enacted when we receive heavy snow falls.  A decision is made by the Director of Public works, extensive media coverage occurs, and parking restrictions on residential streets are put into effect.  This parking  ban is usually enacted one or two times a year, depending on the volume of snow we receive.

  • Residential Streets- Snow Parking Ban in designated zones (Know Your Zone):
    • Residential streets are grouped into areas or ‘zones’ so plowing can occur efficiently. Extensive media coverage will notify the public as to what zone will be plowed and when. This info will also be posted daily on www.KnowYourZone.winnipeg.ca
    • It’s critical that you ‘Know your Zone’ and understand the DATES AND TIMES when you cannot park on residential streets so as to prevent your vehicle from being ticketed/towed.
    • Zones will be plowed in two shifts:  Day Shift 7 a.m. to  7 p.m. / Night Shift 7 p.m. to  7 a.m.
      • Parking tickets will be issued between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m.
      • During both the day and night shifts, vehicles will be courtesy towed to a nearby street.  As the location of the vehicle will be GPS’d, contact 311 to locate your vehicle.  You will be asked to provide your vehicle’s license number and description.

    • REMINDER: If you are travelling to other areas of Winnipeg when the City is under a residential streets snow parking ban, you must KNOW THE ZONE of the street you will be parking on.  Otherwise, your car may be ticketed and towed.
    • Enter address on the Citizens Information Service to learn about parking bans on specific streets.

DECLARED, EMERGENCY AND TEMPORARY BANS

In the case of an extreme snowfall event, these parking bans could potentially be put into place.  For a detailed overview of parking bans, see City of Winnipeg Parking Bans

Continually Improving:   The Public Works Department is currently working on a smart phone APP to assist in helping people understand when parking bans come into effect in their area and other areas of the City. We expect the APP to be available for the mid-2016 snow season.
