Transit U-Pass Approved For Students

Improving transit service in the South Winnipeg–St. Norbert Ward is one of my top ten priorities. On March 25, 2015, I supported members of City Council as they approved the “U-Pass”, a special transit pass for students at the University of Winnipeg and University of Manitoba. Students will be able to use the U-Pass starting in September, 2016. The U-Pass will be valid for the entire academic year (September to April); participation is mandatory and will be issued in exchange for a $260 increase in student fees. Currently, the U-Pass is available to undergraduate students at the University of Manitoba and University of Winnipeg.

For South Winnipeg, this will have a positive impact on our roadways. The University of Manitoba Students Union notes that the U of M provides 6,400 parking stalls for students. Having thousands of students take the bus vs their cars will reduce vehicle traffic congestion leading to and around the University of Manitoba, reduce the demand for parking in and around the campuses, and reduce wear and tear on our roads. Not to mention the reduction in greenhouse gas emissions!  I am pleased to have supported this important transit initiative.
