Help Shape Winnipeg’s Master Plan for Off-Leash Dog Areas

The City of Winnipeg operates 10 off-leash dog areas within the City’s Parks system (see map below). In recent years, use of off-leash dog areas has significantly increased, and as a result, a need has been identified to increase the number of these areas.

In 2012, a Guidelines for Off Leash Dog Parks in the City of Winnipeg report was developed. The new Off-Leash Dog Areas Master Plan will build on the City’s previously prepared Guidelines report, and incorporate additional research and public feedback.  The objectives of the Master Plan are to:

• Engage with key stakeholders and the general public on the current challenges and opportunities for off-leash dog areas in Winnipeg.
• Develop site selection criteria and metrics for determining how off-leash dog areas are selected.
• Develop an implementation strategy for off-leash dog areas.
• Identify gaps and problems to help form the basis for an off- leash dog area policy.
• Develop policies to address conflicts and maintenance issues.
• Identify potential partnership and funding opportunities.

Starting November 3, 2017, Winnipeggers are encouraged to go online to see presentations boards AND fill out a survey and online mapping tool at winnipeg.ca/offleashareas.

The project team will also be meeting with a wide variety of park users, local dog park advocacy groups, local recreation groups and community members to gather additional information and knowledge about the project.  For more information contact:

A draft of the plan will be shared in early fall with the final plan submitted in April 2018.
