Protecting Winnipeg’s Ash Trees

The City of Winnipeg’s Urban Forestry Branch is currently conducting an inventory of Ash trees on private property to augment the City’s public tree inventory and to continue its preparation for the arrival of the Emerald Ash Borer beetle.
The Emerald Ash Borer is a destructive invasive pest that feeds on and kills all Ash trees. As the majority of Ash trees in the City are located on private property, this inventory is a critical part of the City’s Emerald Ash Borer preparedness efforts as it will provide necessary information to identify the impact of this pest on our urban forest and the resources that will be required to manage it.
Urban Forestry staff are authorized to enter private property to conduct the inventory under the provisions of the Manitoba Forest Health Protection Act. All City staff will be carrying official City and Provincial identification cards.
The closest confirmed infestations of the Emerald Ash Borer beetle are in Minnesota.
IMPORTANT TIPS: Join the effort to keep the Emerald Ash Borer out of Winnipeg!
- Don’t move firewood. Especially, don’t move firewood into Manitoba that was obtained outside of Manitoba. Buy it locally and leave it where you bought it.
- Report suspect ash trees to City of Winnipeg by contacting 311 or the Urban Forestry Branch, 1539 Waverley Street, Winnipeg, Manitoba, R3T 4V7.
