Improving Safety at Kenaston Boulevard & Bishop Grandin Boulevard

There are multiple reports of vehicles on northbound Kenaston Boulevard driving through the signalized intersection and crossing over lanes of oncoming vehicles.
The signalized intersection of Bishop Grandin Boulevard and Kenaston Boulevard is on a curve, under a flyover and visibly is reduced for motorists. Southbound Bishop Grandin Boulevard has a speed limit of 80 km/hr but has a reduced speed limit sign and warning signs 500 meters before the signalized intersection. Northbound Kenaston Boulevard is a trade corridor with an 80 km/hr speed limit. There are no reduced speed limit or warning signs on northbound Kenaston Boulevard 500 meters or more before the signalized intersection at Bishop Grandin Boulevard.
As part of the Transportation Master Plan update – the public works department is looking at all high collision intersections. I want to expedite the review of this intersection, therefore, on March 3, 2021, I moved a motion directing the Winnipeg Public Service to:
- Report back on the number of collisions occurring at the intersection of Kenaston Boulevard and Bishop Grandin Boulevard over the past four years.
- Install reduced speed limit and warning signage on northbound Kenaston Boulevard, a minimum of 500 metres before the signalized intersection at Bishop Grandin Boulevard, within 90 days.
On March 11, 2021, the Standing Policy Committee on Infrastructure Renewal and Public Works concurred with my request and will be reporting back in up to 270 days (December 2021) with an action plan to improve safety at this intersection.
