South Winnipeg Active Transportation Advisory Group

For the past 14 years, I’ve been working to improve walking and cycling in the South Winnipeg–St. Norbert ward. By working together with community members, groups and businesses, we’ve made great strides in many areas. We’ve secured significant infrastructure funding; built sidewalks, pathways, crosswalks and more; we’ve created walking and cycling maps; enabled safer cycling on Pembina Highway; and have arguably what is the best pathway system in the entire City within the communities of South Pointe and Bridgwater.
BUT – there is more we can do to improve walking and cycling, and to make it safer! I am asking for your HELP.
As City Councillor, I have a broad overview on a multitude of issues and ward priorities. To maintain focus on this important issue, I would appreciate receiving community support to continue improving active transportation in the South Winnipeg–St. Norbert Ward. I would like to establish a ‘South Winnipeg Active Transportation Advisory Group’ who could work together and bring forward recommendations to me and the City regarding priorities for our community.
I can offer my support for information/education sessions and other resources for interested representatives. We live in the area and have an excellent understanding of the community’s needs. The City of Winnipeg recently approved the pedestrian and cycling strategy, which is an excellent guiding document. I anticipate that the gorup would meet once a month or so to gather and share ideas, strategize and prioritize.
If you are interested in providing leadership and involvement to improve walking and cycling in our community, please E-Mail me at jlukes@winnipeg.ca. Provide your name, address and contact information.
