Black History Month Celebrations

Winnipeg is gearing up for its 39th Annual Black History Month Celebration!

The history of Black people is often inadequately reflected in the general history of Canada; therefore, there is a need for specific attention to be paid on said history. February (Black History Month) is the month in which we bear witness to the progress, richness, and diversity of the achievements and contributions of Black people in Canada and around the world. It is also a time to reflect on the issues and difficulties that were faced and continue to be faced within the Black community.

Here in Winnipeg, the Annual Black History Month Celebration was launched by the local chapter of the National Black Coalition of Canada in 1981. The honour and responsibility of organizing these events have passed through different organizations throughout the years, and in 2020, it is organized by the Black History Month Celebration Committee (BHMCC) Inc. The events are open to the public, and we hope to see a diverse body of participants, of all communities and ages, in the hope that the linkages between our histories become evident.

The organizing committee has lined up a month full of activities – check out complete details at Black History Month Winnipeg. I’m going to the Sobey’s cooking class to learn how to make Jerk Chicken!
