Crosswalk at Victoria General Hospital

Since 2016, I’ve been working to have a crosswalk installed on Pembina Highway in order to provide safe access to Victoria General Hospital for southbound residents.  At that time, I requested that the City’s Public Works Department complete a study, and while the final report did not recommend a crossing, I presented a logical case for pedestrian safety and access to the Standing Policy Committee on Infrastructure Renewal and Public Works.

It’s common sense that a combination of 6+ lanes of highway, a T-intersection with Dartmouth Drive, and a U-Turn area present unsafe conditions for pedestrians to cross and access the Hospital.

On Tuesday, June 27, 2017, the Standing Policy Committee on Infrastructure Renewal and Public Works approved a concept plan to begin addressing this situation.  To read the Committee’s report, visit IRPW – June 27, 2017 Agenda – Pedestrian access to Victoria Hospital

New foot access for Victoria Hospital

Winnipeg city hall is promising improved pedestrian access to Victoria General Hospital for 2018.

Council’s public works committee endorsed a plan Tuesday to construct a new sidewalk on the south side of Dartmouth Drive, between the eastern-most parking lot entrances, to connect to the west sidewalk.  It also authorized a study to consider the construction of a pedestrian island at the intersection of Pembina Highway and Dartmouth Drive, and a possible “No U-turn” sign for northbound Pembina Highway traffic at the intersection to improve pedestrian safety.

“It’s a start,” said Coun. Janice Lukes (South Winnipeg-St. Norbert), adding the top priority for area residents is the construction of the pedestrian island.

Luis Escobar, the city’s manager of transportation, said the $150,000 work would be done as part of the 2018 cycling and pedestrian action plan. Read more by Aldo Santin.
