Population Surge: 68,000+ Residents in South Winnipeg-St. Norbert Ward

Statistics Canada recently released its 2016 Census data on population and dwelling counts. This information is extremely exciting for data crunchers!  I’ve been working with a data analyst from the Manitoba Partnership of the Capital Region, which has resulted in the production of a very interesting map showing population changes throughout the City of Winnipeg.

Extensive data analysis has revealed:

  • Population in the South Winnipeg-St. Norbert Ward is approx. 68,116 residents.
  • This represents an increase of 25% or about 14,000 residents since the 2011 census!

Immigration is the  primary reason for the increase in growth in Manitoba, Winnipeg AND in our Ward.  Rapid growth always brings many great opportunities and challenges – which I deal with every day in this role as City Councillor for the area!  While there are too many opportunities to list, one of the greatest is the ability to work with new Canadians from so many countries! There is no need for global travel, as the world has come to us in South Winnipeg-St. Norbert!  Food, clothing, languages, culture and so much more!  It is truly an honour to be your Councillor for the South Winnipeg-St. Norbert ward!

I have to say, however, the one challenge I struggle with is the current allocation of resources at City Hall to support this growth and enable my office to provide residents with the level of service I want to deliver!

As you can see from the map, the growth is not evenly spread across Winnipeg’s 15 wards.  Yet, the Councillor’s Ward Allowance funding allocated by the City to each Councillor for office operations is exactly the same!

I have requested a Ward Boundary Review to address these inequities in order to provide the same level of service to all City of Winnipeg citizens. This process is expected to occur in 2018, but until then – please be patient with your calls, e-mails and letters to our office.  My Operations Manager, Bev, and I will continue to respond to you as soon as we can!

Thank you and celebrate residing in the BEST ward in the City of Winnipeg!
