YOUR Input on the Next Chief of Police

What qualities and skills will the next Chief of Police need?  The Winnipeg Police Board is asking for the community’s input on the recruitment of the next Chief of the Winnipeg Police Service.

The Winnipeg Police Board formed a committee to oversee hiring of the next Chief of the Winnipeg Police Service and has encouraged the community to weigh in on the qualities and skills the successful candidate will need.

Chief Devon Clunis announced his intention to retire from his position of Chief of the Winnipeg Police Service on March 10, 2016. Chief Clunis has been with the Service for over 29 years, and has been Chief of Police since 2012. The Winnipeg Police Board is grateful for his hard work and remains committed to the vision of creating a culture of safety for all in Winnipeg, a vision the Board credits to Chief Clunis, with his tireless passion for crime prevention through social development. Chief Clunis will continue in his role as Chief of Police until July 9.

The Board will be undertaking a national recruitment campaign to select the next Chief of Police. The Board is currently developing a job posting, which will be based on the Chief of Police position profile the Board adopted in November 2015, as well as community input.

“We are asking the community to weigh in on the qualities the next Chief of Police will need to be an effective leader and live up to the community’s needs and expectations,” said Councillor Scott Gillingham, Chair of the Board. “We will consider community input as we develop the job posting. Our Police Chief Recruitment Committee will report to the public on our recruitment process and the results of our consultations at our monthly Board meetings.”

The Board is encouraging anyone wishing to share ideas and suggestions about the leadership qualities and management skills the Board should be looking for in the new Chief of Police to email the Board at wpb@winnipeg.ca. The Board will accept delegations at its meeting on May 6 or written comments until May 13, 2016.
