Bridgwater Centre Tree Planting
Pleased to launch a 2 yr – $85,000 phased tree planting initiative – in celebration of Winnipeg 150 & as part of a larger neighbourhood greening project!
Each ward receives a % of funding from land sales to put toward parks & recreation. Many new recreation facilities are being installed in the ward, & now this tree planting initiative is underway.
I’ve received many requests from residents to plant trees & install benches along the pathways on Kenaston. So, we are initially focusing the plantings on either side of Bridgwater Centre – the addition of trees & benches will provide much needed shade & rest areas & will also help to soften the ‘corridor feel’ of Kenaston. (Ok. We will need a lot of trees-but it can be done!)
Over the next two years (in spring & fall) a total of ~ 158 larger trees will be planted & cared for by the city’s forestry department.
2024 Fall
Phase 1: 23 trees were planted along southbound Kenaston pathway-just before Northtown Rd.
- Triumph elm (1) – Dutch Elm Disease resistant
- Freedom elm (9) – Dutch Elm Disease resistant
- Manitoba maple (6)
- Starlite crabapple (3)
- Ming cherry (4)
Thanks to all the tree hugging residents who send in feedback ~ and to the Forestry Department who put the tree planting plan together & maintain!
