New School: Waverley West Ecole South Pointe

Pembina Trails School Division has named its new school in Waverley West École South Pointe School.  Premier Greg Selinger broke ground last month on the $30 million kindergarten to Grade 8 school and early learning child care centre at 615 Kirkbridge Drive.

The division said in a statement on its website that this announcement comes after months of public consultation, research, and numerous deliberations surrounding the most fitting name. A naming committee was formed and our trustees as well as senior administration team had the opportunity to sit in on insightful presentations from both local historian and First Nations groups.

“This is a brand new community,” school board chair Tim Johnson. “We chose the name keeping in mind that our new school will be the first public building in the area. We feel we have the unique opportunity to lead this neighborhood’s identity through the school. Consulting with our community was an important part of the process.”

It is expected to open in time for the 2016-17 school year.
