South Winnipeg Community Centre Expansion – Richmond Site

Councillor Chambers and I are thrilled to announce two new exciting developments for the South Winnipeg Community Centre – Richmond site!  This site is located in Ft Richmond which is Councillor Chambers ward, but it serves thousands of residents from the entire catchment area of Waverley West. You may recall, the SWCC board, executive and City of Winnipeg community services staff undertook a ‘re-envisioning’ exercise in 2023 to determine what upgrades should occur to both the Waverley and Richmond sites.

This re-visioning exercise was the first step in developing, and ultimately will help in securing funding for many upgrades to the centre.

NEW SPRAY PAD:

Approximately $2 million has now been secured to construct a spray pad on the west side of the  South Winnipeg Community Centre – Richmond site. This funding becomes available in 2025.

There will also be shade tents, benches and bike racks! This is going to be a spectacular addition to the community centre site!

DESIGN OF GYMNASIUM:

  • A total of  $350,000 has been secured to support preliminary design to obtain a Class 3 estimate for a gymnasium expansion. This funding is available to access in 2024.  The design process will look at how a new gymnasium attaches to the existing facility, and it will also incorporate public and stakeholder engagement to confirm project scope and obtain feedback on the proposed design. The process will also look at financial revenue and mortgage opportunities a new gymnasium presents.
  • A gymnasium expansion is estimated to be approximately $15 million. Funding for the expansion has not yet been identified  but the detailed design will provide numbers and information to seek funding support from other levels of government and outside sources.

The community services department will begin work on both these projects in 2024.  I want to thank Councillor Chambers and the South Winnipeg Community Centre executive and board of directors for their committed efforts to improving recreation in our neighbourhoods!
